Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Child labor remains a pressing concern in rural communities across Nigeria, where socio-economic challenges force children into exploitative labor conditions. In Dambatta LGA, Kano State, children often engage in farming, domestic work, and other hazardous activities that deprive them of education and a healthy childhood. Public Relations (PR) has the potential to combat child labor by raising awareness, mobilizing stakeholders, and advocating for stronger enforcement of child protection laws.
PR campaigns leveraging mass media, grassroots advocacy, and collaboration with local leaders can address cultural and economic factors sustaining child labor. Recent studies emphasize that strategic PR efforts can effectively change perceptions and behaviors related to child labor (Ahmed & Garba, 2024). This study investigates the role of PR in combating child labor in Dambatta LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by governmental and non-governmental organizations to curb child labor, it persists in Dambatta LGA due to inadequate awareness and cultural acceptance. The underutilization of PR strategies has limited the success of advocacy campaigns in changing public attitudes and behaviors. This study examines how PR strategies can combat child labor effectively.
